Asked ‘What is time?’ Albert Einstein answered, ‘Time is what the clock shows’. Another valid answer could be that past and future merely exist in people’s memory and expectations and that there’s only an eternal present. Everyone carries time with them nowadays - a diary, watch, mobile phone, etc. So as far as time is concerned everyone is an experienced authority, but strangely enough nobody is able to give a satisfactory definition of it. The reason for this is probably that everything and everybody is immersed in the flow of time and is carried along with it. Time is represented in one way or another in the art of all cultures. ‘Time’ is the theme of the sixth part in the Wanderwort series.
